Kanye West's 20 Best Lyrics About Cars
Between his clothing line, love life, and whatever his company DONDA is to be,
10. "Gold Digger" feat. Jamie Foxx (2005)
"But while y'all washing, watch him / He gone make it to a Benz out of that Datson"
On a somewhat-related-but-maybe-not-really note: Kanye made a Ray Charles out of that Jamie Foxx. Foxx had been getting a lot of positive attention at the time for his portrayal of Charles in the 2004 biopic, "Ray," and started a singing career based off of how close his impression was. A few years later, he'd release "Blame It on the Alcohol" with T-Pain, and no one would compare the two ever again.
9. "Touch the Sky" feat. Lupe Fiasco (2005)
"Take 'em back to the plan / Me and my momma hopped in the U-Haul van."
The late Louis Vuitton mom and her son made the cross-country drive from Chicago to New Jersey, in the hopes that a change of scenery would help Kanye become somebody. Not long after, all these somebodies began wanting to become Kanye.
8. Drive Slow feat. Paul Wall and GLC (2006)
"See back, back then, then if you had a car / You were the Chi-town version of Baby"
Back, back then, then, if you owned one car, it didn't mean you had five huge red stars tattooed on your head. It also didn't mean you signed Limp Bizkit to your record label. Nor did it mean you owned a fictional oil company. What it did mean though, was that your car was stunting heavy.
7."Heavy Hitters" feat. GLC (2002)
"Last 9/11, I was poor on the ave, until I pluraled my math / Now it's Porsche 911, and I'm flooring the gas"
Jay-Z's "The Blueprint" came out on September 11, 2001, a footnote to an otherwise horrible day. That album, though, marked Kanye's arrival and set him on a different path, one bound for super-stardom. It was almost all derailed by him "flooring the gas," though.
6. "Through the Wire" (2004)
"If you could feel how my face felt you would know how Ma$e felt / Thank God I ain't too cool for the safe belt"
On October 23, 2002, Kanye was the victim of a tragic, almost-fatal car crash, resulting in his mouth being wired shut. The song about the accident was nominated for Grammys and the video for a Source Awards, deservedly so. He's been making noise ever since.
5. "Otis" (2011)
Kanye West and Jay-Z, feat. Otis Redding
"They ain't see me cause I pulled up in my other Benz / Last week I was in my other, other Benz"
We kind of wish this was made into a bumper sticker that read: "My other, other Benz is a Mercedes."
4. "All Falls Down" feat. Syleena Johnson (2004)
"She's so precious with the peer pressure / Couldn't afford a car so she named her daughter Alexis"
Kanye was originally presented as a new breed of rapper, something little seen before: a hybrid of flash and substance who could speak to the suburbs and the streets; an every-man. Along with "Jesus Walks," it was this line that really spoke to that image.
3. "Run This Town" (2009)
Jay-Z feat. Kanye West and Rihanna
"What you think I rap for? To push a fuckin' RAV-4?"
Legendary. Someone should update the Toyota RAV-4 Wikipedia entry to read: "Years: 1994-2009."
2. "Last Call" (2004)
"Killin' y'all ni**as on that lyrical shit / Mayonnaise colored Benz, I push Miracle Whips"
According to Kanye, these are the lines that made Jay's "eyes light up" and would eventually lead to his Roc chaining day. Update: 'Ye doesn't drive his cars at all, now he has [insert forgotten G.O.O.D.Music artist here] do that for him.
1. "Mercy" feat. Big Sean, Pusha T and 2 Chainz (2012)
"Lamborghini, mercy, your chick she's so thirsty / I'm in that two-seat Lambo with your girl, she's tryna jerk me"
