Macklemore & Ryan Lewis are the first performers confirmed for the ninth annual mtvU Woodie Awards, which will take place March 14 during the annual SxSW Music Festival in Austin, Texas.
The Seattle pair – the team behind the massive hit “Thrift Shop” featuring Wanz -- are also in the hunt for the “Branching Out” Woodie, where they’ll come up against Dan Deacon, deadmau5, Amanda Palmer, The xx, Jack White and Avicii.
They’re not the only hip hoppers on show for MtvU. Brooklyn MC Joey Bada$$, British singer and songwriter Jake Bugg and Mercury Music Prize-winning indie rockers Alt-J will take to stage for the free Woodie Awards Festival, a multiple-stage fest that’ll serve as the entree for the awards show. More performers will be announced in the coming days.
MtvU is MTV’s around-the-clock college network, which is aired to more than 750 colleges across the country, according to the broadcaster. MTV and mtvU will air a half-hour “2013 Woodie Awards” special on Sunday, March 17 at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT. Sponsors are Chevrolet, Express, The Hershey Company and Outlook.com.
Macklemore & Ryan Lewis will take their show on the road for the 2013 Woodies Tour, which stops at three colleges.
