Rihanna on Dating Chris Brown: 'We Value Each Other'
"We don't have those types of arguments anymore," she says
After being seen out and about together during the holidays, Rihanna finally opens up about her rekindled relationship with Chris Brown. In the latest issue of Rolling Stone, out Jan. 31, Rihanna talks about how dating him this time around is different.
"I decided it was more important for me to be happy and I wasn't going to let anybody's opinion get in the way of that," she says. "Even if it's a mistake, it's my mistake. After being tormented for so many years, being angry and dark, I'd rather just live my truth and take the backlash. I can handle it."
Rumors of the couple's reconciliation first surfaced when they worked together on remixes to each other's songs, "Birthday Cake" and "Turn Up the Music." It'll be four years next month since Brown assaulted his then-girlfriend before the 2009 Grammys. He pleaded guilty and received 180 hours of community service as well as a five-year probation.
"When you add up the pieces from the outside, it's not the cutest puzzle in the world," Rihanna continues. "You see us walking somewhere, driving somewhere, in the studio, in the club, and you think you know. But it's different now. We don't have those types of arguments anymore. We talk about shit. We value each other. We know exactly what we have now, and we don't want to lose that."
Rihanna is also convinced that Brown now understands the ramification of his actions. "He doesn't have the luxury of fucking up again," she says. "That's just not an option. I can't say that nothing else will ever go wrong. But I'm pretty solid in the knowing that he's disgusted by that. And I wouldn't have gone this far if I ever thought that was a possibility."
Despite the criticism of her love life, Rihanna has been doing great for herself. Her "Unapologetic" single, "Diamonds," currently resides at No. 8 on the Hot 100 and No. 2 on R&B/Hip-Hop Songs. She is launching her first fashion collection on Feb. 16 and is nominated for three 2013 Grammy nominations.
