Jay-Z Stars in First Rocawear Commercial
Jay-Z reflects on his journey from Brooklyn's Marcy Projects to legendary music superstardom and beyond in the first ever Rocawear commercial. Aptly titled "Marcy to Barclays," the 30-second spot debuted today (April 2) on Jay-Z's website Life and Times.
"Wherever you grow up, it's your root, right?" the Roc Nation mogul asks while images of the streets of New York appear. As the story unfolds, Jay explains how his vision for success evolved over time. "My goal was to have one gold album, and that was it. And then it became, 'I want to show that artists can ascend to the executive ranks.'"
Indeed, Jay-Z has certainly ascended to the highest executive ranks. The entrepreneur, who is part owner of the New Jersey Nets, will perform a string of concerts at what will become the team's new home -- the Barclay's Center -- beginning in September.
As familiar as he is with success, some would argue that Jay-Z's Rocawear venture hasn't quite lived up to his high bar since launching a decade ago. This past winter a global sales decline caused the company's Manhattan store to lay off half of its 56 employees.
So, is the black and white retrospective a last ditch effort to reverse the line's recent woes? Not according to Jay-Z, who feels that the brand "just keeps reinventing itself and redefining itself every single day."
