Kacey Musgraves Pulls No Punches on 'Same Trailer Different Park'

Tuesday will see the release of "Same Trailer Different Park," the debut Mercury Records set from Kacey Musgraves. Nobody is more excited to see the album in stores than the Sulphur Springs, TX native herself.

"It's going to be awesome," Musgraves confessed to Billboard. "I feel like I have worked awful hard to get to enjoy the things that are happening right now. I worked really hard on the album. The process lasted about a year. I got to be a co-producer on it with Luke Laird and Shane McAnally. It seems like the stars are aligning. I'm getting a chance to say what I really want to say, and it's really fun."

Part of the fun of Musgraves' music is that she pulls no punches with her music. There are references to one-night stands, joint-smoking, and other emotions or vices that other artists just won't touch. Calling like she sees it is something the singer feels is very important to her, "I feel like ‘Why do it any other way?' Life is short. Say it how you feel it."

'Merry Go ‘Round,' the album's first single, currently sits at No. 16 on Billboard's Hot Country Songs chart, but that's not the only Musgraves representation on the charts. She's also one of the writers on "Mama's Broken Heart," the latest single from Miranda Lambert. Having another artist believe in her work is important.

"That was a cool experience. As a songwriter, having something that on the charts that I'm singing as an artist is amazing and a dream come true within itself, but having a well-respected female artist – who is also a songwriter – singing something that I had a hand in writing is also a dream come true."

Musgraves will be promoting her album on the road as part of the upcoming Kenny Chesney "No Shoes Nation" tour. That's on top of her recent stint opening for CMA Vocal Group of the Year Little Big Town.

"They couldn't be nicer," she says of LBT. "You would be hard pressed to find any other Grammy winners as nice as they are."

At each show, the response has gotten stronger and stronger, and leading the charge has been the top-10 "Merry Go ‘Round." She admits the subject matter is a little unorthodox, but she has seen the impact first-hand.

"It's a song that from the get-go, I felt something from, and really believed in. People really connected with it when I would play it out. I told people that ‘I really don't think we need to over think things here. This needs to be the single. It's not a typical ‘radio' song, but that might be what works in its' favor. I'm glad I went that route. It's been amazing to see the response to it. As a songwriter, sure I want to make catchy music – that's a feat in itself, but if I can make people feel something at the same time, then I've done my job."
