Madonna Plays Ex-Husband Sean Penn's Haiti Fundraiser, Tells Him 'I Love You'
Sean Penn still holds a special place in Madonna’s heart.
The Queen of Pop made an appearance at her ex-husband’s Help Haiti Home charity gala in Beverly Hills Saturday night (Jan. 9), where she shared her feelings about him during a speech. The two married in 1985 and divorced four years later.
"I want to say Sean, I love you, from the moment that I laid eyes on you," Madonna said, according to Variety. "I just wish you'd stop smoking cigarettes.
Madonna reportedly performed a French song on the ukelele, which was auctioned off for $300,000. Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers closed the evening. Other celebrities in attendance included Justin Bieber, Pamela Anderson, Lana Del Rey, Mark Ruffalo and Leonardo DiCaprio.
Madonna and Penn arrived at Saturday’s event holding hands, although the actor was a man of few words over the course of the evening. And rightly so: hours earlier it was revealed that Penn had secretly met with Mexican drug lord Joaquín Guzmán Loera (aka “El Chapo”) for an interview. The meeting occurred while the drug trafficker was on the run from Mexican authorities.
Penn conducted the interview for Rolling Stone, but it is unclear whether he asked or was approached by the publication. The story went live Saturday night.
