Culture Club Cancels North American and U.K. Reunion Tour Dates
Back in August, Culture Club announced they’d be reforming their classic lineup for a few 2014 tour dates and a new album. Now, only half of that is true.
“It is with great regret that the members of Culture Club have announced the cancellation of their tours in North America and the UK scheduled for November and December 2014,” the band announced via press release today (Nov. 13). A polyp was discovered on frontman Boy George’s throat, and a throat specialist ordered him to rest his voice in order to avoid an operation.
The news is especially disappointing for fans, as the first date -- a Nov. 15 gig in Rancho Mirage, CA -- was just two days away.
The statement says the band is “devastated” at the news. The dates are cancelled until further notice and buyers can receive refunds at the point of purchase.
“We are hoping we can reschedule the concerts for next year, and hopefully George’s problem will be resolved,” Culture Club said via the statement.
The so-far untitled new album will arrive in 2015 and will be produced by veteran U.K. musician Martin Glover (aka Youth), who has previously worked with acts like the Verve, Erasure, and the Futureheads, in addition to playing bass in Killing Joke.
Culture Club has released one album -- 1999’s Don't Mind If I Do -- since disbanding in 1986 following their early '80s glory days. The reunited "classic lineup" features frontman Boy George, bassist Mikey Craig, guitarist/keyboardist Roy Hay, and drummer Jon Moss.
Here are the canceled Culture Club dates:
Nov. 15: Rancho Mirage, CA (Agua Caliente Casino Resort Spa)
Nov. 17: Oakland, CA (Fox Theater)
Nov. 19: Los Angeles, CA (Shrine Auditorium)
Nov. 22: Las Vegas, NV (The Pearl)
Nov. 25: New York, NY (Beacon Theatre)
Nov. 28: Atlantic City, NJ (Etess Arena)
