Lights Single Premiere: Listen to ‘Running With the Boys’
The Canadian star explains why her latest single is one of her favorite tracks on her new album.
Lights, the 27-year-old electro-pop artist, is readying her third studio album, Little Machines, for a Sept. 23 release on Warner Bros. Records, and is following the buoyant lead single “Up We Go” with the magnetic track “Running With the Boys.” Listen to the new single below, exclusively on Billboard.com:
With pulsating percussion and lyrics that harken back to the singer-songwriter's camping days, “Running With the Boys” stands out on the eclectic track list of Little Machines, and Lights tells Billboard that the song is easily one of her favorites on the new album. “It feels really honest and nostalgic,” she says of the single. “‘Running With the Boys’ is about being a kid again, and that sort of innocence and imagination that made life so exciting. As an adult, you know a lot more, and in the music industry that’s sometimes a little crippling when it comes to creativity. For the creation of this album, I had to look back at that a little bit and enjoy making music again.”
Little Machines is a peak moment in a career that has included a Juno Award win for New Artist of the Year as well as two engaging studio albums, with 2011’s Siberia allowing Lights to experiment with her pop aesthetic. Although the singer-songwriter says that she was inspired by bold female artists like Bjork, Kate Bush and Patti Smith while working on her new record with producer/engineer Drew Pearson, she also stresses that Little Machines was made with the intent of remaining accessible.
“I felt more of a risk with my last album,” she says. “With this record … it was more like, ‘Let’s write some incredible songs that everyone can sing along to and lyrically latch onto.’ It was all about that — making really good individual songs and then putting them all together as an album.”
Following the release of Little Machines, Lights will kick off a U.S. tour on Oct. 24 in Portland, Maine. You can pre-order the new album here.
