The "Stay The Night" producer praises the "unique texture" of Grande's voice.
Ariana Grande is still riding high on the Hot 100 chart with "Problem," the lead single from her upcoming sophomore album. But over the weekend, the pop singer announced that she already knows what her next single will be: "Break Free," a track produced by "Clarity" mastermind Zedd that will premiere next Wednesday (July 2).
We at Pop Shop have heard this track, and can confirm that it lives up to the expectations that come with a superstar collaboration. Last weekend at Bonnaroo, we caught up with Zedd about "Break Free," and he filled us in on how he came to work the Grande:
A few months ago, Zedd overheard a female artist performing at a label showcase while he was backstage, and mentioned to his team that he wanted to work with whoever owned the voice he was hearing. That voice turned out to be Grande's, and a month later, the producer and singer "randomly got connected" and made the "Problem" follow-up.
"[Grande's voice] is super-recognizable, it has a unique texture," says Zedd, "and really, that's all I'm looking for in a singer, is to have a voice that is really special and different from other voices you hear everyday."
While Grande's "Problem" (featuring Iggy Azalea) holds at No. 2 on the current Hot 100 chart, Zedd is also working on new music. Click here to watch more from his discussion with Billboard at Bonnaroo.
