“Three years ago I couldn’t write a song about a girl on my surfboard, I mean what does that mean?” said Cody Simpson with a laugh, talking to Billboard’s Keith Caulfield at the Radio Disney Music Awards in Los Angeles on April 26.
Now the innuendo titles the Australian pop singer’s hit song, which marks the beginning of a maturing artist making moves.
“It’s definitely the beginning of a new sound for me, a new phase in my career, being able to just be kind of really creatively free, artistically free,” he said.
Simpson said he’d felt limited previously because of his age, but now at 17 he feels like he’s breaking out of those limitations.
“And it’s all about improvement too,” he added. “That, I think, is something that’s starting to happen more exponentially for me.”
