Lorde's 'Team' Video: 'Royals' Follow-Up Features Motorcycle Jousting
Lorde's debut single "Royals" held atop the Hot 100 for its ninth week last week, but the 17-year-old chanteuse has just launched the official visual for the follow-up. Check out the arresting, adult-free music video for "Team" below:
In the clip, Lorde is the queen of a society in which teenagers rule the roost, and in which merit is apparently tested with motorcycle jousting exhibitions. Amidst the crumbling walls and indecipherable graffiti is Lorde's hideaway, where water is chugged by the gallon and the stringy-haired loser of the bike battle is eventually delivered.
"This video was borne from a dream i had a few months ago about teenagers in their own world, a world with hierarchies and initiations, where the boy who was second in command had acne on his face, and so did the girl who was queen," Lorde (real name: Ella Yelich-O'Connor) posted on Facebook when the video debuted on Tuesday (Dec. 3). "i dreamt about this world being so different to anything anyone had ever seen, a dark world full of tropical plants and ruins and sweat. and of this world, i dreamt about tests that didn’t need to be passed in order to be allowed in: sometimes the person who loses is stronger. enjoy xx"
During the reign of "Royals," "Team" -- the second single from Lorde's debut album "Pure Heroine" -- has peaked at No. 69 on the Hot 100 chart. "Pure Heroine," meanwhile, has moved 413,000 copies since September, according to Nielsen SoundScan. After a lengthy bidding war, the singer signed a worldwide deal with Songs Music Publishing worth $2.5 million last month.
