Four years removed from her last album, pop star and former "American Idol" champ Jordin Sparks unveiled a new single, "Skipping a Beat," on Thursday (Aug. 1) after teasing the track all week on Instagram and Twitter. The love song previews the long-awaited follow-up to the singer's 2009 sophomore album, "Battlefield."
“You’re my lover, you’re my friend, you’re my gangsta,” Sparks sings on the track, which is presumably about her pop star boyfriend, Jason Derulo. With its breezy R&B vibe, the mid-tempo song is essentially the polar opposite of Sparks' fierce 2011 single “I Am Woman,” which was originally pegged to lead her third album.
The "Idol" alum spent the downtime in between solo musical projects starring in the 2012 film "Sparkle" alongside Whitney Houston, with whom she collaborated on the official soundtrack. Along with "Skipping a Beat," Sparks' next musical project will include a duet with Derulo titled "Before It Breaks."
Speaking of Derulo, the singer is also preparing a new album -- "Tattoos" is due out on Sept. 24. Along with "The Other Side," which is currently at No. 18 on the Hot 100, the LP will include the 2 Chainz-assisted track “Talk Dirty.”
