Listen to Will Smith's Collab With Bomba Estéreo for 'Fiesta' Remix: 'It's Just Magic'
Smith raps in English & Spanish on the new track, which Simón Mejia calls "beyond anything we have dreamed of."
Smith and Bomba have teamed up for a remix of the Colombian band’s contagious “Fiesta,” a mix of Colombian beats and electronica. The remix, out on Sony Music Latin, premieres on radio Friday (Oct. 2) and will be available for sale in all digital outlets.
The question is, how the heck did Smith and Bomba Estéreo end up together? While labels and managers usually push these collaborations, in this case, it was all about musical tastes.
A few months back, Smith was hanging out in Colombia when he heard “Fiesta” blasting everywhere. He loved the electro tropical fusion but didn’t know who the track was by until he found it in his manager’s playlist weeks later and was told it belonged to a group called Bomba Estéreo.
"When I was told that Will Smith wanted to collaborate on a remix with Bomba, I couldn't believe it," said Simón Mejia, Bomba Estéreo's founder/multi-instrumentalist in a statement. "This opportunity to work with Will was beyond anything we have dreamed of. It's not a traditional featuring -- it's just magic.”
“Fiesta,” which is nominated for a Latin Grammy in the record of the year category, is an uptempo dance track equally laced with loops and electronica and with traditional Colombian beats. The new remix adds Smith’s rapping -- in English and Spanish -- to the mix. A music video was already released in Los Angeles and will be released soon.
That Smith has chosen to return to music -- he hasn’t released an album since 2005 -- next to Bomba, a band that is virtually unknown to the mainstream audience in the U.S., is a huge coup for the group.
"We all had a blast together at the video shoot, and we want to thank Will for being so warm and such a pleasure to work with... and for rapping in Spanish!" said Mejía.
