PSY Watch: Will 'Gangnam Style' Reach No. 1 on the Hot 100?

Although the video was posted on July 15, 2012, PSY's "Gangnam Style" didn't go viral until August, when celebrities and the media started commenting on the hilarious video. It was his first return after 2010's "PSY Five," and now boasts almost 300 million views on YouTube. See The 10 Best 'Gangnam Style' Parodies.

The K-Pop star has vowed to perform topless if the song climbs to the top of the chart. Will we see PSY strip down?

With more than 300 million views on YouTube, PSY's "Gangnam Style" has inspired parodies by hot moms, Gandalf the Grey, "My Little Pony," Navy men and marching bands. The song is so popular that it rose to No. 2 two weeks ago -- behind Maroon 5's "One More Night" -- but only time will tell if PSY can gallop his way to No. 1.

If he does reach the top, PSY has another surprise in store for his fans, and people across the world will be seeing a lot more of the South Korean rapper. "If it ranks number one in the Billboard chart, then I will perform 'Gangnam Style' topless in a place where everyone can watch," Psy said in a news conference, Reuters reports.

But will we see PSY strip down to show off his horse dance? We'll be keeping you updated throughout the week, tracking the ups and downs of "Gangnam Style" to see if PSY fans are in for a shirtless show.

NOVEMBER 14:

After a seven-week logjam of Maroon 5's "One More Night" at No. 1 and PSY's Gangnam Style" at No. 2 on the Hot 100, the Korean rapper's breakout smash slides to No. 5. Although it leads Digital Songs for a fifth frame, it relinquishes its five-week lead on On-Demand Songs, dropping to No. 3 and tumbles 14-22 on Radio Songs.

"Night" keeps the crown at No. 1, while Rihanna's "Diamonds" takes PSY's place in the Hot 100's runner-up spot, jumping from No. 4 with top Digital Gainer honors. Read the full story here.

OCTOBER 31:

Another week, another 1-2 finish for Maroon 5 and PSY on the Billboard Hot 100. For a sixth straight week, Maroon 5's "One More Night," which spends a seventh overall frame at No. 1, fends off the Korean rapper's "Gangnam Style."

The songs are the first to place at Nos. 1 and 2, respectively, for six consecutive weeks since Rihanna's "We Found Love," featuring Calvin Harris, kept LMFAO's "Sexy and I Know It" at No. 2 for seven weeks last November/December. A positive for PSY to keep in mind: after those seven weeks, "Sexy" at last switched spots with "Love," logging its first of two weeks at No. 1. Read the full story here.

OCTOBER 17:

Hold your horses, PSY. Maroon 5 once again holds off PSY's attempt to gallop to No 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, also thwarting the rapper's promise to perform "Gangnam Style" topless if the tune hits the top. This week, "Gangnam Style" holds on to the No. 2 spot for a fourth frame as Maroon 5's "One More Night" spends a fifth week at No. 1. Read the full story here.

OCTOBER 10:

Keep your shirt on, PSY. Maroon 5 again prevents his revealing revelry, as "One More Night" spends a fourth week at No. 1. PSY's smash holds at No. 2 for a third frame.

Again, the race was extremely close. Last week, "Night" bested "Style" by fewer than 500 overall chart points, the smallest difference between Nos. 1 and 2 since the Feb. 18 chart. This week, just 700 points separate the songs, as "Night" gains by less than 1% in overall points and "Style" declines by 1%.

While PSY keeps his shirt on for another week, "Style" and "Night" appear headed for a battle for the summit again next week, given the continued close chart race. If "Style" can close the gap enough on the large airplay lead of "Night," and if it can widen its lead enough over "Night" in streaming, it could be in line for No. 1 on the Hot 100 next week. OCTOBER 9:

Will PSY crown the Billboard Hot 100 tomorrow?

Again, Maroon 5's "One More Night" ranked as the No. 2 track on Radio Songs last week with 116 million audience impressions, according to Nielsen BDS (up 15 million), while PSY's "Gangnam Style" jumped 34-23 with 46 million impressions (up 12 million). After slightly more than six-and-a-half days of the Radio Songs' tracking week, Maroon 5's audience impressions now stand at 113 million (up 8 million from the same period a week ago). PSY is at 50 million impressions (up 9 million from its week-to-date total last week). "Night" ranks at No. 1 on the building Radio Songs chart, while "Style" is No. 17.

As previously noted, sales, however, could make the difference in "Style" topping the Hot 100, despite Maroon 5's airplay advantage. "Style" is now forecasted to sell 250,000-260,000 by the end of the sales tracking week and "Night," 160,000-170,000. With PSY's projected sales lead, along with "Style" closing the gap on the lead that "Night" held in on-demand streaming last week (see below), he could be on his way to No. 1 on the Hot 100 with "Style."

We find out tomorrow on Billboard.com.

OCTOBER 8:

PSY and manager Scooter Braun have been tweeting up a storm, campaigning to get "Gangnam Style" to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. They've even gone so far as to ask Adam Levine to give PSY a chance.

Braun tweeted, "@PSY_oppa @Billboard go for #1 this week! #GANGNAMSTYLE!! haha. @AdamLevine ... please let it be #1. thank u (sic)." Meanwhile, PSY himself wrote to his 600,000 followers: "Listen up EVERYBODY!! Help me out to get #NO1 @Billboard!! Buy #GangnamStyle @itunes and request it at the radio!!"

Do you think PSY's social campaign will help push the song to No. 1?

OCTOBER 7:

Here's today's airplay update, as we could be just three days away from PSY crowning the Billboard Hot 100.

After slightly more than four-and-a-half days of the Radio Songs' tracking week, Maroon 5's audience impressions now stand at 77 million (up 5.2 million from the same period a week ago). PSY is at 34 million impressions (up 5.6 million from its week-to-date total last week). "Night" ranks at No. 1 on the building Radio Songs chart, while "Style" is No. 17.

As previously noted, sales, however, could make the difference in "Style" topping the Hot 100, despite Maroon 5's airplay advantage. "Style" is forecasted to sell 260,000-280,000 by the end of the sales tracking week and "Night," 160,000-180,000. With PSY's projected sales lead, along with "Style" closing the gap on the lead that "Night" held in on-demand streaming last week (see below), he could be on his way to No. 1 on the Hot 100 with "Style."

OCTOBER 6:

Last week, Maroon 5's "One More Night" ranked as the No. 2 title on Radio Songs with 116 million audience impressions, according to Nielsen BDS (up 15 million), while PSY's "Gangnam Style" jumped 34-23 with 46 million impressions (up 12 million). After slightly more than three-and-a-half days of the Radio Songs' tracking week, Maroon 5's audience impressions stand at 59 million (up 5 million from the same period a week ago). PSY is at 25 million impressions (also up 5 million from its week-to-date total last week).

With "Style" forecasted to sell 260,000-280,000 by the end of the sales tracking week and "Night," 160,000-180,000, along with "Style" closing the gap on the lead that "Night" held in on-demand streaming last week -- "Night" was No. 1 on On-Demand Songs with 807,000 on-demand streams, up 4%, according to BDS), but PSY roared 9-2 with the chart's largest gain (up 30% to 799,000) -- the stage could be set for a No. 1 Hot 100 rank (and a shirtless PSY). lt;/p>

OCTOBER 5:

In the battle between "Style" and Maroon 5's "One More Night" for No. 1 on the Hot 100, PSY's tune could sell in the range of 260,000 to 280,000, as the song has been trending down, so say industry forecasters, for most of the week. Still, the weekend can always throw a wrench into proceedings, and anything is possible.

For Maroon 5, its current Hot 100 No. 1 "Night" is on course to sell another 160,000 to 180,000 downloads, according to industry projections.

Maroon 5's deficit in sales compared to PSY last week was overcome on the current Hot 100 by its large lead in airplay. After slightly more than two-and-a-half days of the Radio Songs' tracking week, Maroon 5's audience impressions stand at 44 million. PSY, however, is at 18 million impressions.

The final wild card is streaming data: "Night" stood at No. 1 in streaming points this past week, but PSY ranked at No. 2, soaring from No. 9, narrowing its overall Hot 100 points deficit with that improvement. In all, the projected sales totals and continued gains for "Style" indicate that it could dethrone "Night" on the Hot 100 No. 1 next week. Read the full story here.

On Oct. 4, PSY performed a free concert for more than 80,000 fans in Seoul. Fire shoots up from the stage as an army of screaming fans sings in unison and does the "Gangnam Style" dance along with the K-pop star. Watch below.

OCTOBER 4:

PSY is still in the hunt for No. 1, while Maroon 5 is looking to defend its title. Can PSY take the crown next week?

Presently, industry sources suggest that "Gangnam Style" might sell between 270,000 to 290,000 downloads by the end of the tracking week on Sunday, Oct. 7. Maroon 5 may shift 155,000 to 175,000. The unit gap between both songs is projecting to be on par this week with what it was over the prior seven days, though that is always subject to change this early in the tracking week.

Last week, Maroon 5's deficiency in sales was overcome on the most recent Hot 100 by its great lead in airplay. After slightly more than a day and a half (the Radio Songs tracking week runs from Wednesday to Tuesday), Maroon 5's audience impressions stand at 27.8 million. PSY, however, is at 11.1 million impressions. Read the full story here.

OCTOBER 3:

Sorry, PSY fans. Looks like the K-pop star won't be performing "Gangnam Style" shirtless -- at least not this week. The boys of Maroon 5 maintained their lead at No. 1 on the Hot 100, keeping PSY at No. 2. The race was extremely close. "One More Night" bested "Gangnam Style" by fewer than 500 overall chart points, after "Night" won last week by approximately 3,000 points. Better luck next time, PSY! Read the full story here.

OCTOBER 2:

PSY toppled another milestone on the evening of Oct. 1, when he passed one million "likes" on Facebook. The "Gangnam Style" star then stopped by "Jimmy Kimmel Live" on Oct. 2 to perform his hit song -- not topless, but in his usual blue blazer. Watch the performance below:

OCTOBER 1:

Here's today's update, while wondering why PSY fans aren't called (good-naturedly, of course) ... "PSY-chos." i.e., crazy for PSY! Shouldn't they/we be? How can we make that happen? "PSY-chos!!!"

Anyway, "Gangnam Style" is now up to 34 million in all-format audience, according to Nielsen BDS, through a bit more than five days of the Radio Songs tracking week. (The chart's monitoring week runs through tomorrow, Tuesday, Oct. 2.) Maroon 5's "One More Night," meanwhile, the Hot 100's current No. 1, ups its total to 87 million on the building chart. The songs were at 27 million and 69 million, respectively, as of yesterday afternoon.

Based on those trends in airplay, plus the projected sales from industry forecasters late last week ("Style" perhaps approaching 300,000; "Night," 200,000), it appears even more likely today that "Night" will remain at No. 1 when highlights of the Hot 100 are revealed Wednesday (Oct. 3) on Billboard.com.

Will PSY go topless this week due to a possible No. 1 Hot 100 ranking? For now, keep your shirt on, PSY.

Does Great Britain Count? If PSY had made the same shirtless pledge regarding the Official Charts Company in the U.K., then fans would be getting an eyeful today. "Gangnam Style" has become the first K-Pop song to top the singles chart. Read the full story here.

SEPTEMBER 30:

PSY's "Gangnam Style" is now up to 27 million in all-format audience, according to Nielsen BDS, through a bit more than four days of the Radio Songs tracking week. (The chart's monitoring week runs through Tuesday, Oct. 2.) Maroon 5's "One More Night," meanwhile, the Hot 100's current No. 1, increases its total to 69 million on the building tally. The songs were at 20 million and 53 million as of yesterday afternoon and 15 million and 43 million, respectively, on Friday.

So, while "Gangnam Style" has gained from 15 million to 27 million in two days, an uptick of 12 million, "Night" has increased from 43 million to 69 million, adding an extra 26 million. Such numbers find "Night" widening its airplay lead in the race for No. 1 on the Hot 100 this week.

Again, sales, as well as streaming, will be key as to who trots into the Hot 100's winner's circle on Wednesday (Oct. 3). Keep checking Billboard.com for updates as PSY and Maroon 5 make their final turns to the finish.

SEPTEMBER 29:

"Gangnam Style" is now up to 20 million in all-format audience, according to Nielsen BDS, through slightly more than three days of the Radio Songs tracking week. (The chart's data period runs through Tuesday, Oct. 2.) Maroon 5's "One More Night," meanwhile, the current Hot 100 leader, increases its total to 53 million on the building tally. The songs were at 15 million and 43 million, respectively, as of yesterday afternoon.

"Gangnam Style" is especially gaining at mainstream top 40 radio, climbing 19-16 on the building Pop Songs airplay chart. ("Night" could jump 2-1 on the ranking.)

PSY made friends at U.S. radio by appearing at Clear Channel Media and Entertainment's iHeart Radio Festival in Las Vegas last week. He even met musicians like Miley Cyrus, Usher and Jon Bon Jovi.

SEPTEMBER 28:

At the moment, Maroon 5 appears to have a slight advantage in overall Hot 100 points, but there's is still a weekend of activity ahead. Another viral video like this one or this one may give PSY the edge, or an unexpected performance like his "Saturday Night Live" cameo could help "Gangnam Style" shoot up the chart.

Next week, PSY's "Gangnam Style" is forecasted to sell 300,000, while Maroon 5's "Night" is expected to move 210,000-225,000. (The Nielsen SoundScan sales tracking week ends on Sunday, Sept. 30.) But through two-and-a-half days of airplay, "Night" has accumulated 43 million in audience, while "Style" has seen only 15 million. Because "Gangnam Style" will likely lead in sales and "Night" will finish ahead in airplay, either song could top the Hot 100.

Two weeks ago, "Gangnam Style" debuted at No. 64 on the Billboard Hot 100, then climbed to No. 11 last week. This week it rose to No. 2, just one spot behind Maroon 5's "One More Night." Although PSY's eyes are set on the top of the Hot 100, he currently sits at No. 1 on both the Digital Songs and Social 50 charts.
