Giddy-up. The MuchMusic Video Awards are going "Gangnam Style." International phenom PSY has just been tapped to co-host the Canadian awards show June 16 that is one giant party on the streets of downtown Toronto, right outside MuchMusic headquarters.
His involvement might push it further over the top. Flash mob anyone?
The South Korean superstar -- whose pop culture hit "Gangnam Style" is now beyond 1.6 billion views on YouTube -- has a new single now, "Gentleman," and prank-filled video for it, will be making his Canadian television performance and hosting debut on the MMVAs.
"I'm looking forward to co-hosting and performing at the MuchMusic Video Awards," he said in a statement. "And I'm looking forward to seeing all my fans in Canada!"
Only one other performer has been announced so far, Demi Lovato -- hot on the heels of her brand new album, "Demi," which came out May 10.
The 2013 MMVAS will air June 16 at 9 p.m. on Fuse in the U.S. and presenting station MuchMusic in Canada. The red carpet arrivals begin at 8 p.m.
The awards are notorious for its party atmosphere, where more than 10,000 fans are privy to glimpses of the nominees, winners and performers from the cordoned-off streets. A luckier few thousand line up for wristbands for the restricted parking lot area where a massive stage is set up for the main performances. A smaller stage is on the adjacent side street.
"PSY is really going to bring the party to this year's MMVAs," said Sheila Sullivan, executive producer, 2013 MMVAs. "His explosive energy and fun approach to music is a great fit for the MMVAs, and our audience. With PSY fronting the show, the biggest street party in the world just got that much louder."
