Exclusive: Skrillex's Rising Star Etnik Premieres 'Take a Shot'

From his Hamburg origins to signing with Skrillex's label, Etnik's path to the ranks of future techno's rising stars has been short and steep.

Mixing the German techno scene's gritty aesthetic with hip-hop influences, the 21-year-old artist's unconventional productions caught the ear of the OWSLA boss, who signed Etnik's well-regarded Neon Daze EP to the imprint last year. Etnik made waves earlier this year with "Unclassified," a dark club-oriented collaboration with rapper Mykki Blanco that became the title track of his new EP.

The release's closing track, "Take a Shot," adopts a far more brooding approach, layering hypnotic vocal phrases beneath groaning bass notes and nuanced rhythms. It's a grim, yet appealing, glimpse down the rabbit hole at Etnik's production potential.

Listen to the full premiere of "Take a Shot" exclusively on Billboard:

"2014 has been a great year for music because so much great stuff has come out lately," says Etnik. "With this EP I tried to take the next step into the future and combine things that weren’t meant to be combined. I’m really excited."

Etnik's Unclassified EP is now available through OWSLA/Bitclap.
