Starkey has long been a low-end pioneer, so it’s no surprise that his new remix doesn’t easily fit any genre other than his own “street bass” label.
Showing off his studio stripes, the Philadelphia veteran gives the latest single by Denver duo Two Fresh his own spin with crunchy bass throbs and the well-orchestrated interplay of crystal-clean percussive and vocal samples.
“I really tried to expand harmonically on all the melodic elements and give them even more depth,” says Starkey. “And instead of going with an 808 workout for the bassline, I went with a richer synth bass sound to flip it into more of a grime sound."

Two Fresh describe the original track as an “introspective look” on the twin brothers’ childhood.
“The track is a carefree ode to just pure enjoyment of music, without the outline of modern day music,” says Two Fresh’s Kendrick Nicholls. “Starkey’s remix was an interesting spin on the track, not only keeping the integrity of our original but adding the signature Starkey sound that we’ve admired since we stumbled onto his music."
Two Fresh’s “Blimpus” EP, which also features remixes by Lil Texas and Atlantic Connection, will be available through SMOG Records on July 29.
