Jamiroquai returns with a 15-year-old song following YouTube action. Plus, Disclosure hits the top five on Hot Dance/Electronic Songs, Cascada is back and Avicii adds another Dance Club Songs No. 1
Jamiroquai jams its way onto Billboard's Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart (No. 10) and Dance/Electronic Streaming Songs (No. 5) with its 15-year-old hit "Canned Heat," spurred by a viral video created by college student Matt Bray. Stemming from Bray's ProjectOneLife, in which he identifies and accomplishes lifelong bucket list items. Bray's 117th item, "Complete 100 days of dance," shows him dancing daily for 120 days to "Canned Heat," with the edited the clip using one second of footage from each day. Of the song's 1.8 million U.S. streams, according to Nielsen BDS, 98 percent hail from YouTube, driven by Bray's May 3 posting.
"Heat" was the second of five Dance Club Songs No. 1s in 1995-2007 for Jamiroquai, topping the chart on Sept. 11, 1999. Its parent album, "Synkronized," reached No. 28 on the Billboard 200 upon its debut on June 26, 1999, with what remains the best sales of week the act's career (47,000 sold, according to Nielsen SoundScan). Shortly after the Dance/Electronic Albums chart launched on June 30, 2001, Jamiroquai scored its only week at No. 1 on an albums chart when "A Funk Odyssey" debuted (Sept. 29, 2001).
'LATCH'-ING UP: Disclosure darts into the Hot Dance/Electronic Songs top five with "Latch" (6-3) in its 37th week on the chart. While the survey dates only to Jan. 26, 2013, this marks the most weeks any song has needed to reach the top five, besting the 27-week climb of Rihanna's "Right Now" last year.
"Latch" holds at No. 3 on Dance/Electronic Digital Songs with its best sales week yet (56,000 downloads sold, up 12 percent). The track, featuring Sam Smith's vocals, also becomes the act's first Billboard Hot 100 top 40 hit, jumping 52-34.
EYEING A RETURN: Cascada, who charted nine songs, including three No. 1s, in 2006-10 on Dance/Mix Show Airplay, returns with "Blink." With sales of 7,000 in its initial sales week, the cut debuts on Hot Dance/Electronic Songs at No. 34 and Dance/Electronic Digital Songs at No. 16. Remixes from Jerome, House of Titans, Crew Cardinal and CJ Stone are lined up to provide different takes on Cascada's foray into EDM.
'ADDICTED' TO No. 1: Avicii earns his sixth No. 1 on Dance Club Songs with "Addicted to You" (2-1). It's the fourth top 10 from his "True" album and third No. 1, following "Wake Me Up!" and "Hey Brother" (No. 1). In between, "You Make Me" rose to No. 7. He first reigned in October 2011 with "Collide," with Leona Lewis.
Remixes from David Guetta, Sick Individuals and Bent Collective, among others, contributed to the new coronation, which coincides with the start of Avicii's tour on May 15 at Allstate Arena in Rosement, Ill. His arena trek continues throughout the U.S. and Europe, culminating at Ushuaia Beach Club in Eivissa, Spain, on Aug. 31.
