Kele Okereke Goes Techno in New Mix: Listen Here

Kele Okereke

Last week, Bloc Party frontman Kele Okereke dropped “Heartbraker,” a vinyl-only EP on Damian Lazarus’s Crosstown Rebels label. Before “Heartbreaker” comes to digital on December 9, Okereke is sharing a new mix that offers some insight into how the indie-dance-band singer has morphed into a techno junkie. Listen to the exclusive premiere of "November 2013 DJ Mix" here:

"This mix reflects a lot of the music I was listening to when I was making the ‘Heartbreaker’ EP,” Okereke explains. “For the past year I've only really been listening to house, deep house and minimal.”

Featuring tracks by Kate Simko, Ben Pearce, and Steve Bug, Okereke demonstrates a musical knowledge base far beyond that of a hipster with a Beatport account. He goes deep, and the influences are reflected in how he changed his creative process for “Heartbreaker.”

“I loved the detached nature of the vocals on tracks such as [Simko’s] 'Go On Then' and [Life & Death’s] 'Step Aside,’” Okereke says. “How emotion is conveyed not by longing melodies but sparse edits and spaciousness – for me it’s a new way of thinking about musical composition.”
