Michael Brun's Alicia Keys and Maxwell Mix, 'Fire We Make': First Listen

Michael Brun

After a victorious set at TomorrowWorld’s Gathering after party, Michael Brun quietly dropped his official remix of Alicia Keys and Maxwell’s “Fire We Make.” The track is the latest in a series of high profile remixes from the Haitian DJ (including Calvin Harris’s “Thinking About You” and Dash Berlin’s “Steal You Away”), and follows the release of his own “Gravity” EP, on Dirty South’s Phazing Records. Listen to Brun’s version of “Fire We Make” here:

Brun grew up in Haiti but left at 16, just before the earthquake of 2010 to attend school at Davidson College in North Carolina (as a pre-med student, no less). Through a series of bootlegs, he caught the attention of Harris and Dirty South (aka Dragan Roganovic) who signed the 21-year-old to his label.

“He does magical stuff with melodies,” Roganovic says of Brun. “This is why I think he stands out. He is very hungry to work and sends me new ideas all the time. I believe he has a bright future ahead of him."

Smoldering and melodic, Brun’s take on “Fire” turns Keys and featured artists Maxwell into house vocalists by turning up the beats without degrading the original. The three songs on “Gravity” also keep melody front and center while honoring the EDM beat requirement with originality.

“I had to consider how I wanted the three tracks to be related without all sounding the same,” Brun says of the EP. “That took a different approach [from] working on just one track. I think these songs are the most mature productions I've done so far.”

The opportunity to work with Roganovic was one Brun didn’t need to think twice about, citing Phazing’s support of his “musical vision.”

“I'm very thankful for it,” Brun says. “He was one of the artists I looked up to when I first started listening to electronic music, so I couldn't have asked for a better mentor.”

Both “Gravity” and Brun’s remix of “Fire We Make” are available now.
