Paul Kalkbrenner Says 'Guten Tag' with New Album and Tour
Few DJs are as synonymous with a city’s music scene as Paul Kalkbrenner is with Berlin techno. But this December, the DJ and producer will cross the Atlantic for a six date live tour in support of his recent album, “Guten Tag.”
While Kalkbrenner teased audiences with his set at Coachella this past spring, the “Guten Tag” tour will be a more formal introduction to the artist’s extensive catalog of dark and intricate techno. If Kalkbrenner’s set at Output in Brooklyn is any indication, fans are in for a considerable show on the Guten Tag tour. There, his performance lasted for three hours, an unusual feat in the era of wham-bam EDM where most DJs typically max at 90 minutes.
“For me its more enjoyable,” Kalkbrenner says of his lengthier set times. “I have seven albums of material, and I have played live since I started my career, so playing for longer seems natural.”
As the American dance music market has expanded in recent years, much of that growth hasn’t been in the kind of music Kalkbrenner plays -- at least not yet.
“In Berlin and Germany dance music has been a part of life since the Wall came down,” Kalkbrenner explains. “The techno scene was culturally significant in uniting East and West for German youth. I know it would be easy for me to sit back and stay in Europe, but the challenge of going into new places and playing for new audiences is something I enjoy. Hopefully America will enjoy it too.”
“Guten Tag” is out now on the artist’s own Paul Kalbrenner Music. His tour launches this December in New York City.
