Dillon Francis may have a cult following among dance lovers, but he’s about to encounter a whole new kind of fan: the bold, proud, costume-wearing geek.
“I love playing video games,” says Francis “That might make me a geek. I also used to play this card game called ‘Magic: The Gathering.’”
The DJ/producer, known for his sense of humor, in his music, live performances, and videos like this, will hit San Diego’s Comic-Con to headline MTV2’s Party in the Park this Thursday, July 18. Open to all registered convention guests, the event aims to “celebrate the fans at Comic-Con, paying tribute to them and honoring them with access to the hottest live musical performances,” according to a statement.
The bill includes Francis — who also kicks off MTV’s “CLUBLAND Artist to Watch Presents” concert series tonight at New York’s Highline Ballroom — and Danish rocker trio New Politics.
Francis, who’s never been to Comic-Con before, is stoked for the experience.
“I would say ‘Batman’ is my favorite [comic hero],” he says. “I want to see some panels for sure.”
Party in the Park is part of MTV’s “Geekend,” which encompasses both events at and coverage of Comic-Con. The network will live-stream updates from the convention, as well as host a panel, competition and more. Since its inception in 1970, Comic-Con has evolved to include film, TV and all things pop culture, but this year marks MTV’s first foray into music-oriented programming during the convention.
A self-proclaimed “class clown,” Francis is the perfect choice to thrown down with the geeks, case in point: “I might open my set with the theme song to ‘X-Men.’”
