Susanne Sundfør, 'White Foxes' (Big Black Delta mix): First Listen

Susanne Sundfør

Luke Gilford

The eerie-voiced M83 collaborator gets a droning makeover.

Susanne Sundfør is an uneasy artist. Her latest album “The Silicone Veil” is leftfield pop, a thrilling effort that has hit No. 1 in her native Norway. It’s icy, gothic, and strange, with moments of intentional dissonance. Her acrobatic warble quivers under its own power, like it’s always about to break (it never does). Such qualities made her the perfect voice for M83’s epic theme for post-apocalyptic Tom Cruise vehicle “Oblivion.” By many accounts, it was better than the movie.

Sundfør’s remixes for other artists inject her natural chill into their work. Check her take on AMA’s “Maps,” including her own additional vocals. Now, L.A. artist Big Black Delta is doing the same trick to a Sundfør original, adding his own drone to “Veil” standout “White Foxes.” The mix strips the track of its Florence & The Machine expanse, pitch-shifting it into appropriate fodder for a very dirty after-hours nightclub – or perhaps what it sounds like in your brain while you’re in one. Check out its premiere on CODE below:

The mix is part of a “White Foxes” remix EP, which also includes takes from Sundfør herself, Kleerup, and Maps (returning the remix favor). It’s out June 25 on Sonnet.

“[Remixes] are always very exciting, because making art or making music or whatever you do, whatever you create, can be a bit isolating,” Sundfør told us via Skype. “With ‘White Foxes’ I did everything myself except mixing it, so I thought it was very interesting to hear other people’s takes on it. It didn’t feel alienating; it felt the opposite, just really cool that somebody else could make some kind of sense of the song.”

Sundfør has the kind of voice that encourages a live listen. She returns to the States for a short coastal run in September.
