Drake Tops Billboard Artist 100 & Chainsmokers Hit Top 5

Drake dominates for a 21st week, while new Hot 100 leaders The Chainsmokers surge from No. 9 to No. 5.

Drake is the top musical act in the United States, ruling the Billboard Artist 100 chart (dated Sept. 3) for a 21st total week. Meanwhile, The Chainsmokers leap into the chart's top five for the first time.

The Artist 100 measures artist activity across Billboard's most influential charts, including the Billboard Hot 100, Top Album Sales and the Social 50. The Artist 100 blends data measuring album and track sales, radio airplay, streaming and social media fan interaction to provide a weekly multi-dimensional ranking of artist popularity.

Drake extends his mark for the most weeks atop the Artist 100 among males (dating to the chart's July 2014 launch); he trails only Taylor Swift, who has totaled 31 weeks at No. 1. Streaming continues to mark the biggest share of Drake's Artist 100 chart points (39 percent), followed by radio airplay (22 percent), digital song sales (17 percent) and album sales (14 percent).

Twenty One Pilots hold at their No. 2 Artist 100 peak; Rihanna keeps at No. 3; and Adele rebounds 6-4.

The Chainsmokers & Halsey's 'Closer' Climbs to No. 1 on Hot 100

Rounding out the Artist 100's top five, The Chainsmokers charge to a new peak, jumping 9-5, up 20 percent in overall activity, concurrent with their climb to No. 1 on the Hot 100 with "Closer" (featuring Halsey). Song sales lead the way for the duo, contributing 42 percent of its Artist 100 points. Streaming follows at 27 percent, as "Closer" crowns both Digital Songs (116,000 sold, up 44 percent) and Streaming Songs (23.1 million U.S. streams, up 24 percent), according to Nielsen Music.

Notably, album sales account for only 2 percent of The Chainsmokers' Artist 100 points total. "Closer" is a stand-alone single, as was prior No. 3 Hot 100 hit "Don't Let Me Down" (featuring Daya; the song ranks at No. 8 on the Sept. 3 Hot 100); the act's "Roses" (featuring Rozes; a No. 6 Hot 100 hit in February) is from the twosome's Bouquet EP, which ranks at No. 5 on Top Dance/Electronic Albums with less than 1,000 sold.
