Justin Bieber and Adele Nab New Year No. 1s Down Under
Bieber has the first No. 1 single of 2016 with his platinum track (70,000 units) “Love Yourself” (Def Jam/Universal), which extends its stay at the top of the ARIA Singles Chart for a fourth week. The Canadian pop star lands three tracks in this week’s top 10, with “Sorry” and “What Do You Mean”at No. 3 and No. 9, respectively, and with those songs he locks-up the top three positions on the first streaming chart of the year.
Meanwhile, Adele’s quadruple-platinum certified hit “Hello” (XL/Inertia) starts 2016 at No. 2 on the ARIA Singles Chart, with Shawn Mendes "Stitches" (Def Jam) at No. 4 and Jonas Blue feat. Dakota’s "Fast Car" (Virgin/EMI) at No. 5.
Adele’s seemingly unstoppable 25 leads the ARIA Albums Chart for a sixth successive week. The British singer-songwriter’s third album is now seven-times platinum certified Down Under, though it’s some way off from besting her sophomore set 21, which spent 11 consecutive weeks at the top spot and is 15-times platinum. 21 is currently at No. 19 on the national albums chart and her debut 19 is at No. 39.
Adele’s continuing reign on the albums chart consigns Bieber’s Purpose to No. 2, ahead of Taylor Swift’s 1989 (Big Machine/Universal), Ed Sheeran’s X (Warner Music) and Coldplay’s A Head Full Of Dreams (Parlophone).
Other notables on this week’s chart include One Direction’s fifth album Made In The AM (Syco/Sony) which rises 12-7, The Weeknd’s Beauty Behind The Madness (Universal) which leaps 16-8, and Troye Sivan’s debut full-length Blue Neighbourhood which improves 26-11 (EMI).
