X Ambassadors Top Billboard & Clio Music's Top Commercials, Powered by Shazam
Using tagging data from Shazam, as well as sales and streaming information tracked by Nielsen Music, Billboard partners with Clio Music each month to present a chart ranking the top songs in commercials. Rankings exclude any song that has recently charted within the top 40 of the Billboard Hot 100.
X Ambassadors' "Renegades" leads the July edition of Billboard & Clio Music's Top Commercials powered by Shazam. The track has been prominently featured in a series of spots for the Jeep Renegade and previously ranked as high as No. 3 on the March edition of the list, following the track's March 3 debut. The song racked up 35,000 Shazam tags during July and was aided by 5.9 million streams over the month, according to Nielsen Music. The song has topped both Billboard's Alternative Songs and Rock Airplay charts and has just broken into the top 40 of the Hot 100 (dated Sept. 5, after the end of this tally's tracking period).
Following at No. 2 Top Commercials is a new entry from Halsey, her cover of Tears for Fears' "Mad World." The track is featured in a bacon-crazy commercial for Taco Bell's Bacon Club Chalupa that depicts a dystopian shopping mall where everything is bacon-themed. Though Halsey's "World," recorded for the commercial, has not been released commercially, the track garnered 87,000 Shazam tags in July. Also notably, after the spot premiered July 4, sales for the well-known Gary Jules cover of "World" increased by 163 percent from June to July with 21,000 sold in the tracking period. Meanwhile, Halsey's current radio single, "New Americana," bullets at its No. 22 peak so far on Alternative Songs and has reached No. 15 on the Billboard + Twitter Top Tracks chart.
At No. 5 on Top Commercials, Eric Hutchinson's "Tell the World" notches 43,000 Shazam tags, the second-largest sum of July. The track is featured in an advertisement for Windows 10, "The Future Starts Now," which also features a voiceover from Ethan Hawke. The song is from Hutchinson's most recent album, Pure Fiction, released in April 2014; the set hit No. 97 on the Billboard 200, while "World" reached No. 30 on Adult Alternative Songs. The commercial has revived interest in the track, with streams increasing by 357 percent from June to July (94,000 U.S. streams in that span).
