Mark Ronson, Bruno Mars Top Hot 100 With 'Uptown Funk!'
The song dethrones Taylor Swift's 'Blank Space' after seven weeks, and after a record-tying 19 consecutive weeks of only women at No. 1.
If 2014 was the year of women dominating the Billboard Hot 100's upper reaches, men are wasting no time in trying to reclaim the coveted territory as 2015 begins. On the first chart released this year (dated Jan. 17), Mark Ronson's "Uptown Funk!," featuring Bruno Mars, rises 2-1 to crown the Hot 100.
The song replaces Taylor Swift's "Blank Space" (1-2) after seven weeks on top, ending a record-tying 19 weeks in-a-row of only women holding the No. 1 spot.
As we do each Wednesday, let's look at all the key numbers throughout the top 10 on the sales/airplay/streaming-based Hot 100.
"Funk!," released on RCA Records, grants Ronson a No. 1 with his first Hot 100 entry. (The last such rookie male to rule? Baauer, with "Harlem Shake" for five weeks in 2013.) Ronson had previously made his mark as a writer and producer, having produced Amy Winehouse's No. 9-peaking "Rehab" in 2007 and having co-produced Mars' six-week 2012-13 leader "Locked Out of Heaven." He also co-wrote Christina Aguilera's "Hurt" (No. 19, 2006).
"Funk!" previews Ronson's album Uptown Special, due Tuesday (Jan. 13). "It's definitely one of the best things I've ever done," Ronson says of his new Hot 100 leader. "And, I know that it's one of Bruno's favorite things that he's ever done, as well."
Mars earns his sixth Hot 100 No. 1 and second as a featured artist: he previously reigned as a guest in his first appearance, on B.o.B's "Nothin' on You" in 2010. In between, he led with his own "Just the Way You Are" (four weeks, 2010), "Grenade" (four, 2011), "Heaven" and "When I Was Your Man" (one, 2013).
Among male soloists in the Hot 100's 56-year history, only nine boast more No. 1s than Mars. Michael Jackson leads with 13, followed by Stevie Wonder (10), Elton John, Paul McCartney, Usher (nine each), George Michael (eight), Phil Collins, Frankie Valli and Elvis Presley (seven each; note that Presley's career predated the Hot 100's 1958 launch by two years, during which time he scored such smashes as "Heartbreak Hotel," "Don't Be Cruel," "Hound Dog," "All Shook Up" and "Jailhouse Rock," among many others).
"Funk!," the 1,041st Hot 100 No. 1 of all-time, reaches the top with the majority (65 percent) of its chart activity from sales, as it rebounds 2-1 for a second week atop Digital Songs with 382,000 downloads sold (down 12 percent) in the week ending Jan. 4, according to Nielsen Music. (Thirty-nine of the 50 titles on Digital Songs decline in sales, as the tracking week followed the robust prior period, which covered Christmas-week consumer activity.)
"Funk!" pushes 4-2 on Streaming Songs with a 14 percent surge to 10 million U.S. streams. On Radio Songs, it rises 10-9 with an 11 percent increase to 76 million in all-format audience.
As "Funk!" reaches the Hot 100's apex, men rule the chart for the first time since Aug. 30, when another RCA act, MAGIC!, wrapped a six-week stay at No. 1 with its debut single "Rude." Between "Rude" and "Funk!," Swift led for four total weeks with "Shake It Off," followed by Meghan Trainor's "All About That Bass" (eight) and Swift's "Space." Women, thus, end their lockout of men atop the Hot 100 after a record-tying 19 consecutive weeks. (The streak matched the one first set in 2005 by Gwen Stefani, Mariah Carey and Carrie Underwood.)
Despite its 1-2 drop on the Hot 100, "Space" rebounds for a seventh week at No. 1 on Streaming Songs (3-1; 10.9 million, up 22 percent) and logs a fourth week atop Radio Songs (144 million, essentially even from last week). Swift ties her longest Radio Songs reign; she previously led for four weeks each with "I Knew You Were Trouble." (2013) and "Shake." As on the Hot 100, "Space" falls 1-2 on Digital Songs (284,000, down 44 percent).
Hozier's "Take Me to Church" holds at No. 3 on the Hot 100 after reaching No. 2. It stays at No. 3 on Digital Songs (265,000, down 34 percent) and No. 5 on Radio Songs (92 million, up 1 percent), while rising 6-4 on Streaming Songs (8.5 million, up 6 percent). It tops the subscription services-based On-Demand Songs chart for an eighth week (4.2 million, up 1 percent) and heads up the Hot Rock Songs chart for a 10th week.
Ed Sheeran's "Thinking Out Loud" returns to its Hot 100 peak, and his best career rank, rebounding 7-4. The love song lifts 6-4 on Digital Songs (219,000, down six percent) and re-enters the Streaming Songs top 10 (14-8; 7.4 million, up 21 percent). On Radio Songs, it climbs 20-19 (51 million, up 12 percent).
(Notably, after women set a record by barring men from the Hot 100's top five for seven straight weeks in September-November, four men now infuse the top four, sharing space [no pun intended] with Swift: Ronson, Mars, Hozier and Sheeran.)
Trainor again ranks back-to-back in the Hot 100's top 10, slipping a notch with both "Lips Are Movin" (down to No. 5 from its No. 4 high) and "Bass" (5-6). Current single "Lips" dips 2-5 on Streaming Songs (8.5 million, down 7 percent) and 4-5 on Digital Songs (194, down 43 percent). It keeps at No. 15 on Radio Songs (54 million, up 3 percent). Trainor's debut full-length album Title (an expanded version of her same-named EP) drops Tuesday (13).
Rounding out the Hot 100's top 10, Swift's "Shake" rises 9-7; Sam Smith's No. 5-peaking "I'm Not the Only One" drops 6-8; Nick Jonas' "Jealous" edges 10-9 after reaching No. 8; and Maroon 5's No. 3 hit "Animals" falls 8-10. (Maroon 5's follow-up single, "Sugar," will begin being promoted to pop radio next week.)
