Welcome to Billboard's weekly video show "Real-Time Rewind," which recaps the past week's hottest action on the new Billboard Real-Time Twitter Charts -- Trending 140 and Emerging Artists -- and the news that's driving the action. Hosted by Billboard's Joe Levy, you can watch episode 8, which features a guest appearance by "Weird Al" Yankovic.
So what was happening on the Real-Time Charts this week?
It's all about "Weird Al"! "Weird Al" Yankovic took over the Internet this past week. In anticipation for his 14th studio album, Mandatory Fun, "Weird Al" kicked off an #8videos8days campaign, where he released a video each for eight of the album's songs. Six out of eight of "Weird Al"'s videos hit No. 1 on the Trending 140 chart.
Over on the Billboard 200 chart, Mandatory Fun debuts at No. 1 -- marking it as the first comedy album to hit No. 1 in 50 years.
"If somebody gets sent a link the day after a video premieres, people are like, 'oh, that is so yesterday.' I know that because of the immediacy of the Internet, the best way to get people's attention was to bombard them with something every day," he tells Billboard.
The Trending 140 chart measures the acceleration of conversation around artists and their music, while the Emerging Artists chart measures the volume of tweets around new artists and their songs.
