KATY PERRY FIRST WITH FIVE 4-MILLION SELLERS
We know that Ace of Base was the previous record holder (48 straight weeks). Could you please recap who's next?
G. Wade Hunter
Little Rock, Arkansas
I'm curious about the total download sales of Katy Perry's singles so far. I've just read that "Hot N Cold" and "California Gurls" have each cracked 5 million.
Can you please run down the totals of all her singles?
Sydney, New South Wales, Australia
Hi G. Wade and Alexandrio,
Perry certainly muted the sadness of her incredible streak ending this week with our exclusive breaking news that "The One That Got Away" will be the sixth single from "Teenage Dream." The quest is, thus, on for the set to become the first to generate six Hot 100 No. 1s.
Notably, several billboard.commenters expressed the opinion that "Dream" cut "Hummingbird Heartbeat" should have been the next single.
I agree that the latter song is undoubtedly single-worthy. However, it might be a bit too similar in tempo to previous single "Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)" Should "One" become another smash, perhaps Capitol considers following that mid- to uptempo song with "Hummingbird," which would seemingly flutter to the Hot 100's upper reaches as a seventh single.
As for Perry's record top 10 streak, this week's Hot 100 marks the first without the singer in the upper tier since May 22, 2010.
Here is a look at the longest streaks of artists remaining in the chart's top 10:
And, a look at the download sales of Perry's singles as a lead artist, according to Nielsen SoundScan:
5,011,000, "Hot N Cold"
5,002,000, "California Gurls," featuring Snoop Dogg
4,682,000, "E.T.," featuring Kanye West
4,131,000, "I Kissed a Girl"
3,922,000, "Teenage Dream"
2,405,000, "Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)"
2,053,000, "Waking Up in Vegas"
953,000, "Thinking of You"
403,000, "Peacock" (dance club single; not promoted to pop radio)
("The One That Got Away" has sold 74,000 downloads. "Hummingbird Heartbeat"? 82,000)
"Hot" and "California" are the 17th and 18th titles to reach the 5-million mark in downloads.
The Black Eyed Peas and Lady Gaga are the only other acts with more than one 5-million seller. BEP boasts the all-time top download, "I Gotta Feeling" (7,447,000), and the No. 4 title, "Boom Boom Pow" (6,146,000). In between are Gaga's "Poker Face" (6,364,000) and "Just Dance," featuring Colby O'Donis (6,329,000).
Perry is the only artist with five songs that have passed 4-million in download sales. With "Teenage Dream" at 3,922,000, she could soon extend her record to six such tracks.
