The sister duo takes a break from dominating Billboard's gospel charts for one of the Marys to score a solo hit
"Mary Mary is not putting out new music, but Erica Campbell is," Campbell said, pointing to herself, at a recent visit to Billboard's New York offices. "Point to yourself again – that was great," sister Tina teased in response. (While both sisters' last names are Campbell, each's maiden name is Atkins. Coincidentally, they each married men named Campbell.)
While the duo – also known for its WE TV show "Mary Mary" – has dominated Billboard's Gospel Albums chart since 2000, and Gospel Songs since its 2005 launch, Erica is enjoying her first solo hit on the latter tally, "A Little More Jesus," which rises 23-19 in its third week.
The pair's best-of "Go Get It," meanwhile, spends a 55th week on Gospel Albums. A year ago this week, it debuted at No. 1, where it would log another six weeks. The set became the pair's fifth leader on the list, to go along with eight top 10s on Gospel Songs, including the No. 1s "Heaven" (15 weeks at No. 1 in 2005) and "God in Me," featuring Kierra "Kiki" Sheard (seven, 2009).
The pair has won four Grammy Awards, including for best Gospel song ("Go Get It") earlier this year, and seven Dove Awards.
"I'm excited," about her current solo hit, Erica said, "but, at the same time, I don't believe in putting out music without the people who allowed me to get here in the first place, including Tina.
"We're just expanding and growing as a group, as well as women and individuals."
