'21' = 1 IN 2011 AND 2012?

Hi Gary,

I have followed the Billboard charts since the early 1980s and it doesn't happen very often that an album dominates the upper stratosphere of the Billboard 200 for such an incredible amount of time as Adele's "21" has!

With "21" having earned the honor of Billboard's top album of 2011 and an early candidate to be repeat in 2012, my curiosity and question is this: has any album ever captured the award for top Billboard 200 album two years in a row?

Thanks, and I appreciate all the juicy facts you provide us,

Paul Klanseck

Thanks Paul,

Just three albums have won back-to-back titles for Billboard's top album of the year dating to the Billboard 200's 1956 launch as a weekly survey:

1957, 1958, "My Fair Lady" soundtrack
1962, 1963, "West Side Story" soundtrack
1983, 1984, "Thriller," Michael Jackson

And, one other artist has scored the top album in consecutive years with different releases.
