Vocal Classics - Nat King Cole

Comments

AMG Review

It's an obvious understatement to say that Nat King Cole recorded some vocal classics, but this Capitol compilation (and its counterpart, Instrumental Classics) focuses specifically on King Cole Trio material from early in Cole's career. Although there are only 12 sides, they represent a good assortment of his vocal finesse -- that early ability he had to deliver a reading that was unique yet right, with a laid-back charm that seemed to be unaware of its own power. The set begins in fine fashion with "Sweet Lorraine," and selects two other classics ("Embraceable You," "It's Only a Paper Moon"), but would have profited greatly by taking a few of his brilliant novelties (instead of these ballads). ~ John Bush, All Music Guide
