Cha Cha Cha - Mambo - Merengue -...

AMG Review

On only the second Fiesta LP, leading artist Monchito and his Mambo Royals present a balanced program for dancers in authentic style with the great Fiesta (conga) sound. "Que Me Voy" is typical, with quick interchange among vocal, piano, and trumpet solos. There are also some great non-Latin standards sung in English which come off very well in high, cheesy-romantic, mid-1950s style, such as "You're Driving Me Crazy." The unserious attitude extends to a form of scat singing in places, and there are other flourishes. "Not so sexy, lady" is one admonishment in the cheeky, instructive "Suavecito Cha Cha Cha." The oriental "Mambo Shmambo" is one of the more progressive numbers, but generally Monchito seems happy to play to the Broadway-Catskills dance-orchestra crowd. ~ Tony Wilds, All Music Guide
